BRITTANY, always and forever (John 11:25), is of Brittany Fleming, a well-known trans woman and sex worker from Baltimore who passed away in April 2019. Fleming was a well-respected community worker who was funny, living her life exposed and wanting to talk to people. Fleming’s passing led to a rally calling for a change of education and resources available for transgender women such as Narcan, housing, and opportunities for stable jobs.
“Last year when I heard of her passing, I was completely shocked because people like Brittany transcends time. My week wasn’t normal if Brittany didn’t pop up in it calling me boo, telling me her latest stories of YT folks who passed her by with looks of disgust or fear, or her asking me for a dollar or about my week as an artist. I made this work in honor and in memory of her. I know that she would feel so happy knowing that she traveled all the way to Sweden to exhibit in BLACK VOICES / BLACK MICROCOSM.” - Amani Lewis, 2020.
Biblical Verse: John 11:25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me will live, even though they die."
